_The Martian: Experiential Design
Class Project: FA/DESN 1011 M - Visual Interaction Design
Instructor: Katrina Lovrick
Year: 2025
_The Brief
Our final ‘Visual Interaction Design’ project tasked us with designing a web-based digital experience that communicates a story.
The final submission included wireframes, full Figma designs, and prototyped interactions that demonstrated the intended user experience. Emphasis was placed on aesthetics, creativity, usability, and the overall design process.
_Project Discovery
Before starting the project, we had to select a story to tell, and I chose the 2015 blockbuster “The Martian”.
“When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.”
_Static Screen Deck
I took a keen interest into futuristic layouts, which revolve around micrographics: emulating the HUD of aerospace design and advanced digital surfaces. The static designs largely explore large stylized headings overlaying key images with typically mono typography and miscellaneous iconography, which fill up space and continue to tell the story. The juxtaposition of clean cut design elements alongside more organic or surreal 3D elements are perfect for more particular scenes in the film.
_Full Prototype Walkthrough
This project ultimately ended up being one of my favourite projects I have created so far at my time at York University’s Design program, as I learned so much in such a little amount of time about UI design and prototyping on Figma, which has broadened my horizons and skillset.
