_Typographic Ephemera: The Metamorphosis of Alice
Class Project: FA/DESN 1001 - Typography Letter and Word
Instructor: Ronald Tau
Year: 2024
_The Brief
Redesign a work of classic literature into a collection of typographic ephemera. No imagery, only text from the literature. Change up contexts. Connect the unrelated.
e·phem·er·a /əˈfem(ə)rə/
noun
things that exist or are used or enjoyed for only a short time.
"there were papers, letters, old boxes—all sorts of ephemera"
items of collectible memorabilia, typically written or printed ones, that were originally expected to have only short-term usefulness or popularity.
_Synopsis
My rendition of Alice in Wonderland underscores her transition into Wonderland, and delves into her internal conflict and trepidations as she ventures into the unknown. This anxiety is illustrated through a consistent stutter-like typographic gesture.
I selected “Alice in Wonderland” as my literature, because I believed I could create the most extreme disruption. When you think of Alice in Wonderland, you may think of elaborate and over the top elements, fancy script typefaces, vibrant colours and more. Retelling the story through an ultra minimalist toolkit was a great challenge and ultimately helped me improve my typographic instincts.
